Thomas Gregory Toles (Born October 22, 1951 in London) is an American political cartoonist. He is the 1990 Pulitzer Prize winner for editorial drawing. His cartoons typically show progressive views. Much like Oliphant’s use of his character punk, Toles also includes a small scribble, usually a small caricature of himself on his desk, on the edge of his strip.
Tom Toles wrote for The Buffalo Courier Express, The Buffalo News and The Washington Post. He went The Buffalo News in 2002 acceptance of an offer from The Washington Post to replace Herblock, her late legendary cartoonist, and is signed to Universal Press Syndicate. Part of his acceptance of his new job required him to give up his daily and Sunday cartoon panel distributed by United Feature Randolph Itch 2 a.m., a cartoon based on Toles’ thoughts on fighting insomnia. Tom Toles was replaced on Buffalo News by Adam Zyglis.
In addition to Randolph Itch 2 a.m.Toles also created a daily and Sunday comic about young children called Curious avenue. It ran through his future cartoon editorial syndicate, Universal Press Syndicate, in 1992-1994. A collection of the strip was published in 1983 by Andrews McMeel Publishing.
Tom Toles cartoons appear in more than 200 newspapers across the country. He received the National Cartoonist Society’s Editorial Cartoon Award for 2003 and the Herblock Prize for 2011.
