Captain Sir Tom Moore has revealed his love of cooking, revealing that he enjoys making oatcakes and “makes a great Sunday roast”.
‘My mother taught me [to cook],’ he explained.
She was an excellent baker and cook. Every Sunday we had roast beef and potatoes, and after watching them do it so often, I could do it too. I can make a good Sunday dinner.
“We made some very nice oatcakes, some with sugar and some without, which you could eat with cheese.
“I’ve always been very popular when making cookies,” he added.
The World War II veteran, knighted after raising money in his Bedfordshire garden in April, said he is maintaining his strength with a large bowl of porridge that he has been doing all his life so far, as he can remember.
“When I was a boy, my favorite was sausage and porridge. Now I really like steak and chips with Yorkshire pudding and lots of sauce. I still enjoy my food a lot.
He added that his best meal ever came when his family vacationed in Southport in 1931.

“I had sausages and porridge in a restaurant and it was very nice. I still remember it now! ‘
He added that he was “very happy” to be surrounded by “good cooks” and “decent” food during his military service and that he has had a taste for tapas after serving in Spain.
“I spent four years in Spain and really enjoyed tapas and ate a little here and there.
“You didn’t appear to be charged for this, and it was very good.
“But my favorite now is Chinese food, especially chicken with pineapple and fried rice.
And while he has a penchant for exotic food, the former Blankety Blank nominee, who was born in Yorkshire, doesn’t enjoy a strong brew.
“I don’t like strong Yorkshire style tea, even though I’m from Yorkshire. I like rather weak tea with a lot of milk and a little sugar.
Talking about his typical Christmas feast, Sir Tom added, “We usually have a meeting in my house with a big turkey and all the things that go with it.
“There’s a day or two to eat after that. We always have little things that I can do pretty well because I put a lot of sherry in. And loads of heavy cream on top. It never takes long.
“I like plum pudding that’s lit with brandy. Luckily, when I was little, there were always three- or six-cent pieces in the pudding.
“My favorite drink is a John Collins cocktail. I don’t think it does any harm and it’s made from very nice things like gin and lemon.
“I had it for the first time when I was in India. Every time you see me, I’m very happy to have a John Collins with me! ‘ he added.
