7. The Bieber effect
In 2017, Bieber jumped on a remix of Luis Fonsi and Papa Yankee‘s “Despacito”, who helps push the track up Billboard Hot 100. The success marked the first time in over 20 years that a song sung primarily in Spanish reached number 1 in the US and followed in the footsteps of Los del Rio1996 hit “Macarena”. The song would spend 16 weeks on the chart, tying the record by Mariah Carey and Boyz II men“One Sweet Day”. (This record would of course be broken by Lil Nas X.“Old Town Road” in 2019.) The song became the first Latin American song to be awarded a diamond by the RIAA. Eventually, “Baby” was banned as the best certified single of all time in the US.
“Despacito” also helped Bieber write another piece of history himself. A week after “I’m the One”, his collaboration with, he hit the top of the chart DJ Khaled, did the same thing, it made him the first artist to hit new # 1 in two consecutive weeks.
