Anyone who thinks the MCU may not be able to surpass what it delivered in its Phase III must immediately watch the trailer for the highly anticipated Disney + series Loki It will feature MCU’s beloved villain, the infamous god of mischief. It’s a treasure trove of wonders, but what makes fans lift their jaws off the floor is a blink-and-miss scene near the end of the trailer – a brief shot of the back of a lonely character who very much resembles Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha sees Romanoff aka Black Widow, in which we say goodbye with a heartbreak Avengers: Endgame.
The last time we saw Natasha, it was her who sacrificed herself on the barren planet of Vormir so that Hawkeye could get the Soul Stone, bring back his family that was dusted off by Thanos, and finally get on with his life. Now we only have the exceptionally late one Black widow that is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War and is intended to provide a detailed introduction to who Natasha Romanoff was. While being a prequel Black widow raises no hopes of seeing the super spy in future projects, the trailer Loki certainly does.
At 2:03 a.m. in the trailer, we see the back of a woman sitting with her back to the camera in the midst of high piles of rubble. The purple light and surroundings make it appear as if the location in the scene is the planet Vormir. But what catches our attention is the fact that the character is dressed in all black clothing that looks very much like Natasha’s iconic black costume, along with her classic bob hairstyle that she wore back then The avengers and later in Avangers: Age of Ultron. But that doesn’t have to mean that Natasha is back from the dead.
It’s an earlier version of Black Widow
Let’s go back here for a moment. Our last sighting of Loki was during Endgame When Iron Man, Captain America and the rest of the team in their mission to secure the Infinity Stones went back in different years before the Mad Titan and undone his snapshot in the present. But their first attempt to snatch the space stone hidden in the Tesseract was hit by the Hulk, allowing the god of mischief to escape through a portal.
The story in Loki will start right after this moment, which means it will start 2012. So not only is this Loki a long way from the brave, selfless hero he became in the original timeline, but it also means there is a very lively Black Widow years away from her death in 2023. So it could be her earlier version set in a different timeline, in Loki but it would still mean that it marks the return of Scarlett Johannsson so it’s still a win-win for her fans.
AU version of Black Widow
Much of the trailer also deals with Loki, who gets tangled up with the TVA, the Time Variance Authority – a bureaucracy that rules myriad realities. This means that it could well be an alternate version of Natasha sitting alone on the planet Vormir. Since the trailer also features scenes from a post-apocalyptic New York, chances are the Avengers failed to find that one way out of the fourteen million failed methods to beat Thanos. Perhaps reality is where Tony Stark’s vision is Age of ultron (induced by Wanda) comes true – the heroes of the earth are defeated and the planet burned down.
It’s the black widow of the original timeline
Remember in Endgame how Hulk found it hard to snap the snapshot after wearing the glove and later confessed to Cap that he tried to undo Natasha’s death but failed. Let’s call it daydreaming, but maybe he managed to bring her back, just not as he expected. With the purple background and Vormir setting hard to ignore, it is possible that part of Natasha is back but is tied to the planet and unable to leave.
There is also the possibility that it is Not Black widow
If we base our speculation on what the character looks like from behind, we have another contender – Lady Loki, who is reportedly played by Sophie Di Martino on the series. The actress was inducted into the cast of the series in 2019 and at the time of her cast. Deadline had reported that there is a possibility that she will play the female version of the Asgardian prince.
While details about her role in the film are not yet known, leaked set photos from series production earlier in 2020 appeared to confirm that Martino will actually appear as Lady Loki on the show. She was spotted wearing a black and green suit, which is just a slightly modified version of Loki’s early costume in the MCU. On top of that, her blonde hair is styled very much like Natasha’s. Although the character we see in the trailer appears to have red hair, it could be that the purple lighting Martino a.k.a. Makes Lady Loki’s hair look auburn.
While Lady Loki is not yet pictured in the MCU, comic book fans already know exactly how she came about. Loki is known for his ability to change shape. He adopted a human body intended for Lady Sif’s mind, published in J. Michael Straczynski, Olivier Coipel and Marko Djurdjevics in 2008 Thor Comic series and with it Lady Loki emerged. While she’s just another form of Loki in the comics, given the multiverse point of view, Marvel Studios is currently looking for an alternate reality in which Laufey’s son is actually female.
But nothing can be said for sure, especially regarding the possible return of Black Widow, given that Marvel has used fake scenes in trailers of the MCU movies in the past and the possibility of the Avengers return may be just an illusion – just publication of Loki in 2021 can unlock the secret.
