The upcoming MCU movie Eternal aims to introduce a new series of characters from the comics. Nomad land Director Chloé Zhao was hired to direct the project. In a recent interview, Zhao explained how big a risk Marvel Studios took Eternal by having the action scenes filmed on location instead of on a sound stage in front of a green screen, as is their usual practice.
“Well, I think this is so boring that you will roll your eyes, but I think Marvel I think this movie is very – I think they took one big risk with this one. I think they are going to surprise I hope so … I think this is where Marvel really took the risk that we knew we wanted to shoot on location because by shooting wide angle lenses in places it will affect the way you use visual effects How you do the action. There’s a lot that feels and looks different. We shot mostly on location, but I love being on stage and learning about the technology because I grew up with manga . I always imagined that I wanted to be a manga artist. So I always imagined things that weren’t there. “
Zhao’s reference to manga comics is interesting because they are very different in style from traditional western comics. Chloé had quoted Zhao in an earlier interview The revenant as another important source of inspiration for Eternal when it came to filming the action scenes on location.
“I think for the action sequences I’ve just been working on with such a great team, I wanted to refer a lot to The Revenant. The Revenant is a movie I love so much. And I think we have I have Seen The Revenant so many times, every meeting when we get to our action sequences because most of those sequences were shot on location, and I love how haunting and how you feel the line and the sequences in The Revenant. It is definitely a movie we strive for. And Marvel really, really supported that idea and really chose to do it. “
It will be interesting to see how Zhao can combine aesthetics as diverse as manga and comics The revenant while telling a new story within the MCU formula. At the moment, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Eternalwhich has already been pushed back a lot along with the solo Black widow Movie.
