Captain Marvel will premiere on TNT this weekend, marking its TV debut. This is probably good news for the casual Marvel fan who may have missed it, or for those who want to put it on their DVR. But the cable network has decided to air a marathon of DC movies ahead of the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster. It’s certainly an odd choice, considering there are plenty of Marvel films out there that could serve as a gateway to the big premiere.
TNT’s line-up for the weekend goes into the Captain Marvel Premiere on Sunday January 10th is loaded with DC movies. The selection includes Justice League, Suicide squad, Batman begins, Wonder woman, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and man of Steel. No other Marvel movies in sight. And it’s not that the network doesn’t showcase MCU titles. The network recently revealed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame Back to back. One wonders why everyone in charge of programming at TNT decided to play DC superheroes on cable all weekend before Brie Larson’s big show as Carol Danvers. The full schedule is as follows.
Friday, January 8th: Justice League (8 p.m. E.T.), Suicide squad (10:30 a.m.)
Saturday, January 9th: Suicide squad (3 p.m. E.T.), Justice League (17:30), Wonder woman (8 p.m. E.T.), Batman begins (11 p.m. E.T.)
Sunday January 10th: Batman begins (11 a.m), man of Steel (2 p.m. E.T.), Wonder woman (5 p.m. E.T.), Captain Marvel (8 p.m. E.T.)
This doesn’t mean there should be a feud between DC and Marvel. A line drawn in the sand. Many fans of superheroes love characters and stories from both universes. Even creators like James Gunn, known for directing Guardian of the Galaxy for Marvel does The suicide squad right now before you circle back Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. From a programming point of view, it just seems strange to lead to the network premiere of a huge Marvel movie with a series of DC movies.
Captain Marvel turned out to be a really big hit for Disney and Marvel Studios. With Oscar winner Brie Larson in the lead role, the film was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. It takes place in the 90s when Samuel L. Jackson returns as the younger Nick Fury. It was a formula for success that grossed $ 1.1 billion at the global box office. Larson also played the role in Avengers: Endgamewhich later became the highest grossing film in history.
Marvel is currently preparing for Captain Marvel 2, which will be led by Nia DaCosta. Next to Brie Larson, Mrs. Marvel Star Iman Vellani will appear as Kamala Khan. Captain Marvel Premiere on TNT this Sunday. The full schedule of the network can be found at TNTdrama.com.
