The long-awaited sequel opened in theaters and on HBO Max on Christmas Day and has grossed over $ 131 million worldwide. Only $ 32 million of that total has come from the box office as the public health crisis persists. As of this writing, less than 40% of North American theaters are open.
Asia is currently dominating the global box office thanks to dealing with the pandemic. The cinemas are opening and people are returning to the theaters to see the 2020 and 2021 films. However, Japan has seen a surge lately and is in another lockdown period. In 2020, Asia Pacific accounted for 51% of that global checkout number. Hopefully North American theaters will flourish again in 2021.
The Croods: A New Age was able to hold second place at the box office this weekend after bringing in $ 1.8 million. The animated family film has been a steady earner since opening seven weeks ago and grossed nearly $ 130 million worldwide. Tom hanks’ News from all over the world stuck in third place after making $ 1.2 million Monster hunter ranked fourth with $ 1.1 million. To date, the film has made only $ 17.4 million worldwide.
Fatal was in fifth place this weekend after raking in $ 670,000. Starring Hillary Swank & Michael Ealy, the thriller has received mixed reviews from critics but has grossed just over $ 4 million domestically since it opened in December. Promising young woman is in sixth place after earning $ 560K. The dark comedy thriller has received positive reviews from viewers and critics. Matteo Garrones Pinocchio was able to fetch $ 185,000, which was more than enough to take seventh place.
The war with grandpa remains in the top ten this weekend after raising $ 147,000. Globally, the Robert De Nero comedy grossed just over $ 32 million after its premiere 14 weeks ago. come play came in eighth after making $ 95,000. The horror thriller has received mixed reviews and stars like Gillian Jacobs, John Gallagher Jr., Azhy Robertson, and Winslow Fegley. Finally sci-fi classics extraterrestrial ended the weekend in tenth place with $ 60,000. The classic film was back in the top ten last weekend and will probably still be there next weekend.
