The fact that these twin temples were built was a miracle.

You are on a 100 m high rock pillar over 2,336 m above sea level, which is separated by a gap that is spanned by a bridge.

This stunning tower is called Red Clouds Golden Summit and is located on a ridge on Mount Fanjing or Fanjingshan – an otherworldly UNESCO World Heritage Site – in China’s Wuling Mountains.

The Buddhist temples date from the Ming Dynasty for over 500 years, according to Oddity Central, although they have since been rebuilt from sturdier materials – it gets pretty windy up there.

To get to the temples, visitors must climb 8,800 steps, which takes about four hours. However, there is the option to ride a cable car halfway up the ridge.

Once at the summit, visitors are first greeted by the Buddha temple on the south side of the complex, which is supposed to represent the present.

When crossing the gap – the ‘Goldschwertschlucht’ – you can see the Maitreya temple, which is supposed to represent the future.

Some, we suspect, half expect a hidden Jedi to be upstairs.

According to My Modern Met, Mount Fanjing in southwest China’s Guizhou Province is an important landmark for Buddhists, as they believe that the Maitreya Buddha found “enlightenment” here.

As a result, many temples were built along the mountain, some of which date back to the 7th century.

Although many have been destroyed, around 50 remain.

Unsurprisingly, these incredible temples and the breathtaking scenery around them attract tourists from all over the world.

In 2019 National Geographic Traveler put Mount Fanjing on their list of the best trips of 2019 and described hiking the mountain as “climbing through a sea of clouds”.

Meanwhile, a visitor to Mount Fanjing, Pavel Erokhin, wrote on Tripadvisor: “This has been one of the most memorable places I’ve ever been to. Mainly because of the shape of the mountain itself and the temples right on top.”

And yipjcs88 said, “This is a five-star tourist place with spectacular mountain views.”
