WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COVID TESTS
- You cannot go through the NHS to get a Covid Certificate of Fitness to Air.
- Tests must be purchased and cost anywhere from £ 100 to more than £ 200.
- In almost all countries you need a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test. These are more expensive than antigen or LAMP tests (Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification).
- Check the requirements of the country you are visiting. Some requests are requested up to four days in advance, but most take 72 hours. For more information, see “Entry Requirements” on gov.uk and on the country’s official tourist website.
- Boots (boots.com/covid-19-testing) and Superdrug in conjunction with Melio Health (meliohealth.co.uk/products) offer tests that can be booked online.
- Boot tests are £ 120 with results promised within 48 hours. Superdrug tests cost £ 149, with results in two to three working days.
- Private clinics must be accredited by the UK Accreditation Service.
- Tests take about 15 minutes. Make sure the price includes a “Fit to Fly” certificate.
- Some destinations like Hong Kong accept a LAMP test and some areas like Italy accept an antigen test.
- The consumer group Which? (which.co.uk) has a useful “Where can I get a COVID-19 PCR or private antigen test to go on vacation?” page.
Some hotels have cut prices to lure tourists back next summer, so this could be an especially hot summer destination.

HERE’S YOUR CHECKLIST
- It is best to book a package tour with a company that has an ATOL (Air Travel Organizer’s Licensing) license and is a member of ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents).
- If your trip is a package tour, you are covered in the event the tour operator cancels your vacation – and a statutory refund within 14 days.
- If the company goes bankrupt, the government-backed ATOL fund provides protection to the Civil Aviation Authority.
- Buy insurance while you book your vacation: this will cover you if you get sick or are called to the jury. Most policies do not apply to Covid-related cancellations.
- Book with your credit card. If there is a problem and the vacation is not scheduled, you may get help from your card issuer under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.
- Before booking, check your tour operator’s guidelines in case the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office puts your travel destination on a travel-free list: the more flexible, the better.
