Bet you’ve seen ads for all the major auto insurers. Aside from the Morgan Freeman look being more fun than Flo and her team, how do you decide which auto insurance will actually have the best features for your specific needs? If you’re reading this review, you have likely asked yourself this exact question.
Well today I’m going to try to end the fight, at least when it comes to it Liberty Mutual. After all, they offer a lot more than emus and a fun guy named Doug. With discount for discount, claims that are actually easy to file, and much more, Liberty Mutual offers other well-known companies the opportunity to make their money.
What is Liberty Mutual?
Liberty Mutual is an insurance company that has been around for over 100 years and that has consistently marketed itself as an insurer Really takes care. In fact, one of their main slogans is:
“We believe insurance should alleviate, not create, your concerns.”
Their easy-to-use website and quotation service make that statement true, but so does their story. Liberty Mutual was founded in 1912 and for the first time had set itself the goal of taking out employee compensation insurance. Now they offer everything from auto insurance (which I’ll be focusing on today) to homeowner and renter insurance.
A total of, Liberty Mutual has really made a name for itself when it comes to relatively low prices, big discounts, and commitment to them waited Communities.
How does Liberty Mutual work?
Getting a quote through Liberty Mutual is easy, but you should save up to ten minutes of your time. First, go to the Liberty Mutual website and select the type of insurance you are looking for. (In this case auto). After making your selections, enter your zip code and select “Get My Price”.
You will be taken to the next screen where you will be asked for your first and last name and your birthday.
After Liberty Mutual finds out your name, you will be asked to provide answers to various questions about yourself that will help Liberty Mutual calculate your offer. You can expect to be asked for your address and reply whether or not you lived there for more than three months. As you click through, you will be asked why you were visiting Liberty Mutual’s website and where a copy of your listing could be emailed.
Once you’ve helped Liberty Mutual get to know you, they’ll want to learn more about the car (or cars) that you want to insure. To do this, you need to specify the year and make of your vehicle, as well as the model and the equipment package. Alternatively, you can enter the chassis number of your vehicle, which will automatically fill in your details.
Next you will be asked:
- If you own your car, finance it or lease it.
- When you leave your car at the address you provided.
- In which year did you buy your vehicle?
If this is the only vehicle you want to insure, you can move on to the next step by clicking “Save and Continue”. If you want to insure another car, simply select “Add another vehicle”.
Once Liberty Mutual has a good understanding of the vehicles you want to insure, they want to know more about you. To do this, you will be asked a number of questions including:
- Are you married or in a civil union?
- What’s your gender?
- How old were you when you got your license?
- What is your phone number?
If you would like to add another driver to your listing, please do so now. Just like adding another vehicle, once you have answered the questions about yourself, you have the option to add another driver.
After Liberty Mutual has collected your information, it is just a few more steps to receive a quote. So hold on!
To get started, you need to let Liberty Mutual know if you have any other guidelines. You will then be asked about your employment status, highest level of education and ownership of your home. Answering these questions will help Liberty Mutual find the right discounts for you! For example, if I created a quote for myself, I qualified to save up to 30% by signing up for Liberty Mutual’s RightTrack®.
At this point, all you have to do is tell Liberty Mutual who you currently have an insurance policy through. In order to accurately answer these questions (which I recommend if you are looking for an accurate quote) you need to know:
- Whether or not you currently have auto insurance.
- When you first signed up for car insurance through your current insurer.
- Your current personal injury coverage.
- When would you like your policy to start?
Once you are done and clicked “Save and Continue” for the last time, Liberty Mutual will create your offer! In order to rate Liberty Mutual fairly, I created my own quote. Liberty Mutual offered me the following:
What does Liberty Mutual cost?
The price of your car insurance will depend on many different factors, including your age, driving experience, and your vehicle. That’s why my Prices will be different than Your Prices.
One important factor to consider when getting a quote from an auto insurance company, and Liberty Mutual in particular, is the discounts that you will qualify for. This will lower your rates and qualify you for cheaper auto insurance. Never had an accident? For this you get a discount! Would you like to bundle your home and your car? Discount. Drive less? Discount. You get the picture here.
To find out your tariff, I recommend completing the quotation process yourself. Additionally, in doing this, I suggest that you take the time to do your best to answer any questions you are asked. While they may seem insignificant, even the slightest inaccuracy can make a big difference in what you propose.

ByMile offers a pay-per-mile option
If you live in a city with great public transport, or if you are a bit like me, you may find that you don’t drive that often. If not, you may find that auto insurance prices are unnecessarily high and frankly too high for your risk. This is where ByMile from Liberty Mutual comes in to answer your call for lower car insurance.
ByMile is a small device that tracks your mileage and only calculates you based on the number of miles you drive per month. And if you want to go on a road trip, don’t worry about an outrageous bill. You will only be charged for the first 150 miles you drive on a given day.
Liberty Mutual’s auto insurance calculator is a convenient way to find out how much auto insurance you really need. All you have to do is answer a few quick questions such as: For example, whether you own or finance your car, and then adjust your coverage.
When adjusting your coverage, you have the option to choose whether you would like features such as breakdown assistance and protection against uninsured drivers that are included in your policy. Once you help Liberty Mutual understand what is important to you, it will tell you exactly what products they are suggesting to get you there.
RightTrack® Safe driver program
Are you a safe driver? If so, you can save up to 30% with Liberty Mutual’s RightTrack® Safe Driver program. In fact, you’re guaranteed a discount just to try it out! RightTrack® pays attention to your total kilometers driven, your night driving habits, your braking and your acceleration.
The way RightTrack® tracks your driving habits differs depending on your state. Some states will give you a small label that you stick on your windshield, or others will give you a device that plugs into your vehicle’s OBD port. Depending on where you live, you may be able to simply download the RightTrack app straight to your smartphone.
Roadside assistance around the clock
One of my favorite features Liberty Mutual has is roadside assistance. If you’ve ever been stuck on the side of the road with a broken down car and no one is reliable to help you get back on the road, you will know why.
Liberty Mutual Roadside Assistance is available 24/7 to those registered and includes:
- Towed to the nearest qualifying facility.
- Jump start.
- Deliver emergency fuel.
- Change flat tires.
- Unlock locked vehicle doors.
To use Liberty Mutual Roadside Assistance, you must have selected the towing and occupational safety option for your policy when you signed up.
Community return programs
If giving back to your community is important to you, you’ll be happy to know that Liberty Mutual has that same value. In 2019 alone, they returned over $ 45 million through their community give-back programs.
Liberty Mutual focuses its philanthropy in three different areas: homelessness, accessibility, and education. They even have a team of Liberty Torchbearers, made up of staff who serve, give and volunteer in their communities. And it’s not a small team! In 2019, 75% of their employees took part in the program.
Not that great customer reviews
While you can find great discounts and be impressed by the number of coverage options, one point Liberty Mutual doesn’t offer is customer service. With a nondescript 1.13 out of 5 stars and over 1,000 complaints, Liberty Mutual can’t keep up with its competitors in this area.
However, if you enjoy taking care of the well-designed Liberty Mutual mobile app yourself, Liberty Mutual is probably still a great choice for you.
My experience researching Liberty Mutual
What first impressed me about Liberty Mutual, when researching them for this review, was how many options they make available to their policyholders. Not only do they offer an impressive list of discounts, they also offer pay-per-mile insurance coverage, 24/7 roadside assistance, a simple application process, and even a safe driving program that rewards you as an accomplished driver. These options make it clear that Liberty Mutual is committed to not only serving as many drivers as possible, but genuinely caring about their needs.
On the other side of the coin, what I disappointed most about Liberty Mutual was their less-than-perfect customer ratings. As someone who really values an efficient and helpful line of customer service, this could become an issue if I followed a policy with Liberty Mutual.
Overall, I realize that Liberty Mutual is a household name for a reason. They provide high quality guidelines for fair rewards to people across the country. For many, this is worth more than a few customer service flaws.
Who is Liberty Mutual best for?
Good drivers who qualify for discounts
As with most insurance companies, Liberty Mutual works best for those who qualify for their discounts, which will bring your rates down significantly. Fortunately, Liberty Mutual has a ton of discount options. Customers who are most rewarded are the injury-free, safe drivers.
Low mileage drivers
Low mileage drivers don’t typically pay the same fees as high mileage drivers, but not with Liberty Mutual. If you don’t drive that often or that far, you’ll love saving with the ByMile insurance option.
Those who prefer an online experience
Liberty Mutual has spent a lot of time perfecting their online experience. Obtaining a quote is a thorough, yet simple process. Filing a claim only takes a few minutes. You can do this anytime from the comfort of your own couch on a smartphone.
Who shouldn’t use Liberty Mutual?
Those who are looking for the lowest possible rates
While Liberty Mutual has some competitive prices, they aren’t the lowest. But their huge number of options and great user experience can make up for it in the long run.
Those with an accident or two on their file
Unfortunately, if you’ve had a series of accidents or driving behavior violations, you may not qualify for a large number of discounts from Liberty Mutual.
Drivers who are looking for first class customer service
With low customer service ratings, Liberty Mutual may not be for you if you value an old school insurance experience with frequent customer service calls. You will be more comfortable at Liberty Mutual if you prefer a do-it-yourself approach.
