Estonia had already played against Belarus in qualifying for the 2020 European Championship, which has now been postponed, the final of which is expected to take place after the start of qualification for the 2022 World Cup, probably spread across various European cities due to the pandemic.
The five countries form qualification group E with games to be played from the end of March 2021 to November of the same year, as well as play-off rounds for those affected in March 2022.
On Monday, 55 participating teams were drawn into groups of five or six per group, making a total of 10 groups.
The group winners will automatically qualify for the final, which will take place in Qatar in November and December 2022. The teams in second place play out.
At the draw, teams were sown by estimated strength and region, which meant the Estonian national team could not be drawn in a group with Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Faroe Islands, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Latvia and Lithuania
Of the teams with whom Estonia draws, the form against Belgium is not encouraging, as they lost 8-1 in Brussels and 2-0 in Tallinn in the last World Cup qualifiers. The team currently retains a few stars from the subsequent 2018 final, where it finished third.
The Estonian national team’s record against Wales is two defeats in the 2004 and 2009 friendlies, while Estonia lost three times to the Czech Republic, particularly in qualifying for the European Championship in the late 1990s.
The team has met Belarus eight times in total and was in the same qualifying group for the 2020 European Championship, which has currently been postponed to 2021. The record in qualifying for Estonia was a loss and a tie.
Of the remaining groups, the closest neighbors, Estonia, Latvia and Finland, belong to groups D and G. Finland’s qualifying matches include France and Ukraine, while Latvia will face the Netherlands, Turkey and Norway, as well as Montenegro and Gibraltar got to. Russia was drawn in Group H with Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus.
The first games will be played between March 24th and 31st, 2021, the next rounds from September 1st to 8th, October 8th to 12th and November 11th to 16th, followed by the playoff games on November 24th . until March 29, 2022.
