Britain is hit by the stern of the US storm with 15 flood warnings

The UK is hit by the remains of a US storm this week after torrential rains on Saturday rained for a month in just one day.

There are currently 15 flood warnings in much of the Southwest and Central Plateau – some of them extend as far as North Yorkshire.

And the weather is unlikely to improve much in the coming week as the country will be hit by the end of the Nor’easter storm in the US, temperatures plummeting and causing widespread frost.

A heavy rain weekend follows, with Devon seeing 5.4 inches of rain alone yesterday – more than the 3.4 inch monthly average for England. Carmarthenshire, South Wales, was beaten by 3.9 inches in just 24 hours.

Heavy rains yesterday afternoon caused a coal spike in the Rhondda Valley to run down the side of a hill, urging local authorities to order nearby residents to stay away.

And in the early hours of Saturday morning, 18 people were evacuated from a trailer park in Cornwall under a mass flood.

Meanwhile, a driver of a DPD delivery van in Newbridge in Usk, Wales, who was stranded in the flood, was rescued by rescue services who were crossing the deep water with a dinghy.

Marco Petagna, Met Office forecaster, told The Mirror: “The remnants of the US Northeast Storm are on the way.

“Then it gets colder in the run-up to the big day – and the cold can linger during the festive season.”

Following yesterday’s coal slip, a Rhondda council spokesman confirmed there was no risk to homes in the area – but further moves could be imminent if the rain continues.

A statement said: “Following surveys of the site carried out at the tip of Wattstown after the landslide that morning, the council urges residents to stay away from the site.

“While the landslide does not pose a risk to property, there is still the possibility of further movement around the property and it is imperative that the public remain away.

‘The Council has been in discussion with the UK and Welsh Governments on this site for several months after making privately owned tipping a priority in Wattstown following the Storm Dennis review in recognition of it being placed under a reinforced surveillance system.

“The Council had urgent talks with the Welsh Government after the event and options to secure the site are now being considered.”

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan told Sky News that yesterday’s rainfall figures in Whitebarrow, Devon and Carmarthenshire, South Wales were well above what we expected.

There are currently a total of 15 flood warnings urging the British to take “immediate action” to ensure safety.

These areas include Notter Bridge in Cornwall, where a caravan site was evacuated yesterday.

Parts of Gloucestershire and Hertfordshire have warnings as do York and parts of the Lake District.

And the rain is unlikely to let up well into Christmas week, as the west of the country bears the brunt of the heavy showers – with the hail and thunder sometimes forecast today.

The southwest will then rain more persistently later on Sunday before spreading to much of England and Wales overnight, the Met Office confirmed.

In central and southern England, it will rain heavily at regular intervals on Mondays, and the afternoon will bring brighter magic.

For the rest of the week, temperatures will drop further north as the weather becomes “increasingly wintry”.

Widespread frost will hit the UK through Thursday as it gets even drier and colder.
