‘Messi told me he was screwed when I turned down Barcelona’: Antoine Griezmann lifts the lid on his relationship with the Nou Camp icon and why he’s struggled since joining Atletico Madrid to £ 108million
- Antoine Griezmann has ended talks about an ongoing rift with Lionel Messi
- Griezmann joined Barcelona from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for a £ 108m deal
- Griezmann also hit back his former agent and uncle for criticizing Messi
Antoine Griezmann has announced his initial decision to turn down a move to Barcelona. Lionel Messi was unhappy but insists the duo have a strong relationship now that he’s at the Nou camp.
In 2018, Griezmann starred on his own TV show “La Decision” to reveal his decision to stay at Atletico Madrid, despite the great interest that Barcelona showed. A year later, in 2019, he finally moved for £ 108 million.
His relationship with Messi was a major source of intrigue for viewers at the Nou camp. Griezmann’s former agent and uncle said the two didn’t hit it off.

Griezmann spoke to Universo Valdano late Monday, set the record clear and insisted he get on with Messi but his decision to berate Barcelona in 2018 irritated his teammate today.
“When I signed for the club, I apologized for delaying the move and saying I wouldn’t come to Barcelona,” said Griezmann.
‘I told Lionel Messi that I would give anything on the pitch for the club. I spoke to Leo when I arrived and he told me that when I turned down the first chance he was kidding for publicly asking for it, but he told me he was with me and I notice everyone Day. ‘
Griezmann also targeted his former agent Eric Olhats, who during the recent international hiatus said Messi was overseeing a “terror regime” in Barcelona that had made Griezmann’s life harder.
His uncle has made similar claims, which Griezmann also denies.
“He (Olhats) was very important in my life but I have no relationship with him anymore,” said Griezmann. “I haven’t had a relationship with him since the day I got married. I invited him to the wedding day and he didn’t come. That’s why I stopped having a relationship with him.
“My uncle doesn’t know how football works. And in the end the journalist got the testimony from him. I told Leo I never speak to them, in fact I don’t even have my uncle’s phone number.
“My parents don’t talk to Eric either, so who’s going to talk to him? It can do a lot of damage and cause problems in the changing room. ‘
Griezmann distanced himself from comments from former advisory slating teammate Messi
Griezmann struggled to regain the form Barcelona spent a lot of money on signing Atletico Madrid and the France international has underscored the changes he saw at the Nou camp as a factor that held him back.
“I came to a club that just won LaLiga Santander and I had to win my place because of my work,” said Griezmann.
‘In fact, it was difficult for me to play until December. I’ve always been available for the coach, that’s how I’ve learned and always will be. I will always do what the coach asks me to do, even if I know what he asks me to do will hurt me personally.
In a year and a half I had three coaches [at Barcelona]. It’s not easy. I need time to adapt to my colleagues and they to me. And on top of that there are formation changes. ‘
