Failed driving tests in the UK produce nearly two million kilograms of carbon dioxide in a normal year, according to new research.
The UK driving test pass rate is less than half, and every trip emits carbon dioxide and other emissions, just like any trip in a petrol or diesel vehicle.
The data shows that between April 2019 and April 2020 – before the Covid-19 pandemic led to a decline in the number of tests – a total of 1,599,566 tests took place and 864,966 of them failed (54 percent).
A total of 1,998,512 kg of CO2 were generated in 12 months, which corresponds to 449 round-trip flights from London to Melbourne.

SaveOnEnergy found that Goodmayes in East London, weighing 44,722 kg, was the test center for failed tests between April 2019 and July 2020. The five most polluting test centers were in London
Data scientists from SaveOnEnergy, a price comparison site, assumed each test was conducted in a Ford Fiesta with an average fuel economy of 49 miles per gallon and each route was 10.4 miles.
The researchers also included data from the first half of 2020, but this was affected by a dramatic decrease in number testing due to the pandemic.
For example, fewer than 200,000 tests were performed between April and June 2020, of which 96,838 failed.
SaveOnEnergy found that Goodmayes in East London was the test center that produced the most CO2 from failed tests between April 2019 and July 2020 at 44,722 kg.
The five most polluting test centers were in London. The center in Kingstanding in north Birmingham, the most polluting test center outside the state capital, produced 17,998.87 kg in a 12 month window.
This exceeded Norris Green’s annual emissions in Liverpool by just 16 kg.
Rounding out the top ten locations with the worst crime in the UK are Garretts Green in Birmingham, West Didsbury in Manchester and Hither Green in London.
Only one site in Wales (Cardiff) and two in Scotland (Glasgow and Edinburgh) exceeded 10,000 kg of CO2 over a year
Analyzing the data also found that men took fewer tests than women and were more likely to pass. ‘Women took a total of 937,487 tests [between April 2019 and July 2020]While men only took 856,748, SaveOnEnergy writes in a blog post
Only one site in Wales (Cardiff) and two in Scotland (Glasgow and Edinburgh) exceeded 10,000 kg of CO2 over a year.
Goodmayes is by far the worst offender for carbon emissions from failed tests, with more than double the 12-month total of the runner-up location in Pinne, northwest London.
Analyzing the data also found that men took fewer tests than women and were more likely to pass.
‘Women took a total of 937,487 tests [between April 2019 and July 2020]While men only took 856,748, SaveOnEnergy writes in a blog post.
However, men only failed 428,261 of these tests (50 percent), while 533,468 women (56.9 percent) failed, causing an estimated 1,232,586 kg of CO2 emissions. This is equivalent to burning 1,358,140 pounds of coal. ‘
