Zoom has released a new update for Android and desktop users. The Android update contains several new additions, including an end-of-call tone that is unique for all end calls – regardless of whether the call ended abruptly or whether the caller knowingly ended the call. Desktop users also get support for Apple Silicon processors. In addition, a new report claims that Zoom may be working on launching a new email service and calendar app to compete with Google and Microsoft.
Zoom for Android receives an update with version number 5.4.7. This update is available in the Google Play Store and offers a new alert for all callers as well as many other fixes and security improvements. The update enables contacts imported through the contact integration process to be added as Zoom contacts. Nonverbal feedback options move to the Reactions button in the corner of the participant’s video. The host sees the reactions of each participant in the participant list as well as the total number of each reaction at the bottom of the list. Host and co-hosts can now also use the raise hand function together with the participants and webinar participants. The update for Zoom for Android further improves the grouping of security options when planning. Text messaging (SMS and MMS) support for Zoom Phone Pro users has also been added.
Zoom for the desktop also receives a similar update and offers additional support for Apple Silicon processors. The MacOS Zoom desktop client supports computers with ARM CPUs better, the change log says. Most of the changes introduced in the Android update have also been added for desktop users. The desktop update brings survey reports available during a live session and improves the grouping of security options when planning. With this update there are also some minor bug fixes and security improvements.
A new report from The Information suggests that Zoom may be working to expand its portfolio and introduce new calendar and email services. The web email service may be tested for the next year while the calendar app has not yet reported a schedule. The reliance on online video conferencing should decrease over the next year as the COVID-19 vaccine is now administered. Zoom may want to add more products to its portfolio to stay relevant. The report adds that Zoom aims to build a full enterprise app suite to become a single-purpose platform for enterprise and regular users.
