WILMINGTON, Del. – US President-elect Joe Biden warns of the massive damage the Trump administration has wrought to the national security apparatus and of “roadblocks” in communications between agency officials and his transition team that could undermine the safety of Americans.
“At the moment we are not getting all of the information we need from outbound administration in key national security areas. In my opinion, it is nothing less than irresponsibility,” said Biden.
He warned that his team needed “full visibility” of the budget process in the Department of Defense “to avoid confusion and catch-up that our opponents could potentially take advantage of.”
Biden’s remarks came after being briefed by members of his national security and defense teams and advisers, including his candidates for Secretary of State for Defense, Defense and Homeland Security, as well as his new national security adviser. The president-elect said his team found that agencies vital to our security suffered tremendous damage during President Donald Trump’s tenure.
“Many of them are undermined in terms of staff, capacity and morale. … It makes it harder for our government to protect the American people, ”he said.
