On Sunday the Israel Defense Ministry announced that the Israel Missile Defense Organization had delivered the second of two batteries of the Iron Dome Defense System to the US Army.
The details were disclosed in a January 3 media release announcing that the U.S. Army will receive new batteries manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems under an agreement signed by the Israel Defense Forces and Defense departments .
Israeli Defense Minister Gantz: “The handover of the Iron Dome to the US Army shows the close ties between the Israeli MOD and the US Department of Defense, the effectiveness of the system against various threats and the excellent capabilities of Israeli industry.
Inside Defense first reported on the acquisition plan on Jan. 9, 2019 after receiving a memorandum that Army Chief Procurement Officer Bruce Jette sent to members of Congress to clarify the details.
Iron Dome is an all-weather mobile air defense system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries.
Rafael’s website states that the air defense system is the most widely used missile defense system in the world, with more than 2,000 eavesdropping attempts and a success rate of more than 90%.
The system can protect emergency and maneuvering forces as well as the Forward Operating Base (FOB) and urban areas from a wide variety of indirect and air threats.
