The French Army, or Armée de Terre, is expected to receive 90 VBL Ultima 4 × 4 lightly armored tactical reconnaissance vehicles in 2021.
The Arquus will gradually modernize 733 VBLs to the new VBL Ultima standard.
The VBL Ultima is an improved version of a French vehicle blind leger (VBL) wheeled vehicle with amphibious armor and great mobility and was developed for reconnaissance and infiltration missions.
The advanced vehicles will be upgraded by the French Directorate Générale de l’Armament (DGA) under a 2017 contract.
The self-supporting body of VBL Ultima is made of very dense steel with a thickness between 5 and 11 mm, and the armored windows offer the same protection as the steel.
The VBL Ultima is equipped with a new 130 hp PSA DW10F engine (previously 95 hp), a W5A580 automatic transmission, a gearbox, a braking and cooling system. From 4.5 t to 5.2 t with a load capacity of 1.3 t.
