The Nevskoe Design Bureau, a leading planning and design bureau in the shipbuilding industry in Russia, is preparing various proposals for new aircraft carriers, including modular hybrid ships, for the Russian Navy.
Russian ocean warship manufacturer Nevskoe Design Bureau has unveiled a seemingly modular aircraft carrier concept called the Varan.
The company says its main mission would be to create a universal floating airfield for fighter jets.
The Varan is a modular ship with a floating runway, which is characterized by a high degree of automation and the possibility of using robot systems. It can carry 24 multi-purpose aircraft, six helicopters and up to 20 unmanned aerial vehicles.
The ship’s displacement is about 45,000 tons, length – about 250 m, width – 65 m, draft along the constructive waterline – 9 m. Varan can reach speeds of up to 26 knots.
“[These platforms] is becoming a kind of center for the support of the entire field of activity of Russia and the partner countries in the Arctic, ”said the company representative.
As mentioned in the office, floating airfields can be used to support the operations of transport, rescue and military aviation in the Arctic, to develop new gas fields in the North Sea, to ensure the safety of navigation on the North Sea route and the functions of to meet the Ministry of Defense in the Arctic.
