South Korean weapons manufacturer LIG Nex1 announced that it has delivered the first battery of the Cheongung II medium-range surface-to-air missile systems to the Korean Air Force.
According to a press release from the company, the South Korean Air Force delivered the first Cheongung II (Block-II) missile defense system on November 26th.
The Cheongung II, also known as KM-SAM, is a medium-range surface-to-air guided missile that can effectively respond to mid / high altitude airborne threats. It has a stated maximum range of 50 km at an altitude of 20 km.
South Korean officials reported that a new missile defense system will replace the aging MIM-23 HAWK (Cheolmae) air defense systems. Compared to HAWK, the Cheongung is better suited for electronic warfare and has higher accuracy. The preparation time is short and the single radar can attack multiple targets at the same time, so only a small number of people are required for operation.
