At the beginning of winter, the “Fighting Tigers” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 8, who are currently stationed at the Japanese naval airfield in Misawa, carefully examine the bad weather in order to advise and support the crew in safe flight operations.
Safe winter operations require special procedures by the airline’s maintenance, engineering, flight and de-icing personnel. These procedures include de-icing, anti-icing, cold weather maintenance, and flight operations.
During the winter season, air base personnel and crew provide procedures to remove debris from the aircraft and prevent subsequent build-up of frost, ice, snow or slush. In addition, the operator must ensure that the maintenance procedures for winter operation are appropriate to the weather conditions.
In cold weather, the mechanics regularly spray and apply de-icing fluid to all surfaces of the aircraft to help maintain the aircraft’s aerodynamic properties and unlock frozen moving parts.
VP-8 is currently deployed to Naval Air Facility Misawa, Japan, and conducts patrol, reconnaissance and theater missions in the U.S. 7th Fleet (C7F) area to target the objectives of Commander, Task Force 72, C7F, and U.S. Indo- Pacific Command support across the region.
