Turkey has unveiled an improved version of its hybrid main battle tank that combines the hull of a Leopard 2A4 with the turret of an Altai.
The latest version of the tank was exhibited during Defense Minister Hulusi Akar’s visit to the BMC plant.
The upgraded Leopard 2A4 is equipped with an active protection system and laser warning systems made in Turkey. It combines the chassis of the German tank with the turret of the locally developed Altai with a 120mm smooth barrel pistol.
Altay is Turkey’s third generation + domestically designed and manufactured main battle tank and was developed as part of Turkey’s largest land platform project.
Altay has state-of-the-art technology that enables improved protection from armor, mobility and firepower.
In early October 2019, a senior BMC Ethem Sancak shareholder announced that the Altay tank would be deployed within 24 months. However, the program had significant delays due to failure to access critical components such as the engine, gearbox, and armor.
